Description
Hispanics/Latinos are the largest minority group in the United States. They also suffer disproportionally from type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. This presentation is designed for the healthcare professional who provide nutrition and diabetes counseling to Hispanics and want to learn about food practices, nutrition composition of traditional foods and culturally appropriate teaching strategies and interventions.
Educational Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Participants will be able to compare and contrast traditional foods and dietary practices among the largest Hispanic subgroups in the USA
- Food groups
- Cultural considerations
- Practical counseling tips
- Describe the difference between assimilation and acculturation
- How to counsel effectively across the acculturation spectrum
- Choose different education tools and activities to make nutrition counseling more effective
- Addressing the needs of the auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learners
- Teaching tools that address cultural needs
Target audience: Registered Dietitian/Nutritionists, Certified Diabetes Educators who are Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, Physicians and other health care professionals working with persons with diabetes.
