HOW TO USE THE CARDS AS A TEACHING TOOL

For the healthcare professional:

  • Use the card to learn about traditional Hispanic foods, their names in Spanish and their nutritional composition

Meal Planning Activity for Patient 

  • Spread cards face up
  • Instruct patients to create a meal using the food selections on the cards
  • Ask the patients to count the number of  green, yellow, and red cards selected
    • Green cards – low fat
    • Yellow cards – medium fat
    • Red cards – high fat
  • Provide your patient with meal makeover tips: i.e. broil, instead of frying

Carbohydrate Counting Activity

  • Select 3 foods containing more than 5g of carbohydrates
  • Spread cards face up
  • Ask patient to line the cards in ascending order based on the amount of carbohydrate of each food
  • Ask patient to turn cards over and read the amount of carbohydrate of each food
  • Review information with patient
