HOW TO USE THE CARDS AS A TEACHING TOOL
For the healthcare professional:
- Use the card to learn about traditional Hispanic foods, their names in Spanish and their nutritional composition
Meal Planning Activity for Patient
- Spread cards face up
- Instruct patients to create a meal using the food selections on the cards
- Ask the patients to count the number of green, yellow, and red cards selected
- Green cards – low fat
- Yellow cards – medium fat
- Red cards – high fat
- Provide your patient with meal makeover tips: i.e. broil, instead of frying
Carbohydrate Counting Activity
- Select 3 foods containing more than 5g of carbohydrates
- Spread cards face up
- Ask patient to line the cards in ascending order based on the amount of carbohydrate of each food
- Ask patient to turn cards over and read the amount of carbohydrate of each food
- Review information with patient
