Advance your Spanish skills with this online webinar to help you communicate better with your Spanish speaking patients!
This interactive presentation is designed for health care professionals working with Spanish-speaking clients. Participants develop functional communication skills and increase client-provider connections with heightened cultural sensitivity. Participants learn basic grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, and will be able to apply this knowledge in conversation. This workshop will help participants feel empowered to counsel Spanish-speaking clients more effectively. This course has been designed for health professionals with beginner Spanish speaking skills.
Learning Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Replicate correct pronunciation of Spanish vowels and accents
- Ask simple questions to arrive at basic understanding of the patient health and nutritional needs, as well as greet and take leave of patients.
- Recognize and express basic vocabulary relating to nutrition and health.

About Sandra
Sandra Arevalo, MPH, RDN, CDN, CLC, CDE, FADA
Sandra works as Director of Nutrition Services and Community Outreach at South Bronx Health Center, a program of Montefiore and The Children’s Health Fund. Her work in nutrition education and development of obesity and diabetes prevention programs for the underserved has been presented at national conferences, published in peer reviewed journals and featured in national and international TV. Sandra is well known for her expertise in Food and Culture. She has dedicated her time to train people working with food understand the cultural factors that lead to food choices. She is the author of Microwave Chef, a book inspired by people living in shelters in NYC. She received the Nutrition Education Program of The Year Award from the Academy of Nutrition in 2012, an Award of Excellence from the Hispanic Medical Association in 2013, and named Mom on a Mission Hero by CleanPlates.com in 2017. She was nominated for the Montefiore President’s Award in 2014 and Preceptor of the Year by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2015. She has served as chair of the NYC Nutrition Education Network, Co-Chair of the Cultural Group of the Greater New York Dietetic Association and is a Board Member of LAHIDAN, the group of the Academy of Nutrition committed to improving the nutrition of Latinos in the
About Nicole
Nicole Patience, MS, RD, LDN, CDE, CEDRD serves as an Educator and Researcher at the Joslin Diabetes Center and a Nutrition Counselor at the Counseling and Nutrition Center 360 group practice in the Boston area. She is also a bi-lingual Diabetes Health Coach with Welkin Health. As a bi-lingual dietitian, she has taught classes and counseled clients in Spanish since 2006. She was credentialed as Spanish language-proficient by the Temple Health System where she taught DMSE in Spanish for the Temple Diabetes Program. She was an adjunct instructor of Spanish for Dietitians, Levels 1 and 2, for Immaculata University. Nicole graduated with a M.S. in Nutrition from Penn State University, and a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a double major in Food Science and Nutrition. She studied abroad, volunteered and traveled in Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Chile, and Peru. Nicole is a member of Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition (LAHIDAN), a MIG in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Through these experiences, Nicole developed a strong respect for the Latino culture and a passion for supporting and educating her Spanish-speaking clients.
