Understanding Ozempic® What You Need to Know:
Ozempic® is a prescription injection (semaglutide) used to treat adults with type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of medicines called glucagon‑like peptide‑1 (GLP‑1) receptor agonists, which help lower blood glucose by:
- Increasing insulin release when blood glucose (sugar) is high
- Reducing the amount of glucose (blood sugar) produced by the liver
- Slowing how quickly sugar is absorbed from the intestines
All these actions help people with type 2 diabetes lower their blood glucose levels.
My patients tell me that Ozempic® also helps them to reduce their appetite and feel fuller faster, which helps them to lose weight.
Ozempic® can also reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes with heart disease.
The Importance of Proper Storage for Ozempic®
Ozempic® works best when it’s handled and stored in the right way. Because this medicine is sensitive to heat and other conditions, keeping it in the wrong place can make it less effective. This guide will walk you through simple, practical tips for storing Ozempic® and answer common questions, so you can help keep your medication safe and working as it should.
If Ozempic® isn’t stored correctly, it can start to break down and may not work as well. Being kept too hot, too cold, or outside the recommended temperature range can reduce its ability to help manage your blood sugar. That can make your diabetes harder to control and increase the risk of high or low blood sugar. Using spoiled medicine can also raise the chance of side effects, which is why proper storage is so important for your safety.
Does Ozempic® Need to Be Refrigerated?
It depends on whether the Ozempic® pen is new or you have used it for the first time.
How to Store Your New, Unopened Ozempic® Pen
You should store new and unused Ozempic® pens in the refrigerator until the expiration date. The recommended temperature for this medication is between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C).
Does Ozempic® Need to Be Refrigerated After Opening and Using It for the First Time?
You can store the pen you are currently using at room temperature. The maximum time to continue using your Ozempic®pen is 56 days at room temperature between 59° F to 86° F (15°C to 30° C) or refrigerated 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C).. If you’re in a hot climate in the summer and the temperature is over 86°F (30° C) degrees, it will be better to store your Ozempic® pen back in the refrigerator to protect the medication from heat damage.
This flexibility will allow you to travel with your Ozempic® pen as long as you are not below or above the recommended temperatures.
Storage guidelines
In the fridge:
You should store it with the pen cap on in the area where it is cool but not directly next to the cooling element.
At room temp:
Keep Ozempic® away from heat and out of the light. Remember to keep it out of the reach of children.
When Should I Discard Used Ozempic® Pens?
After 56 days you should throw away the pen even if there is still medication still in it.
Tip: when you start using Ozempic® count 56 days and write the date on your calendar to remind you when you need to discard the medication.
You can use your calendar on your phone and set up an alarm to remind you.
Check the expiration date on the package. The solution should be clear and colorless. If the solution appears cloudy, discolored, or contains particles, do not use the pen and contact your healthcare professional.
When Should I Discard New Ozempic® Pens?
Unused Ozempic® pens should be kept in the refrigerator and may be used until the expiration date (EXP) found on the box.
Can I Store the Ozempic® Pen in a Freezer?
No. Do not freeze Ozempic® and do not use Ozempic® if it has been frozen. If it becomes frozen, the medication breaks down and it is not safe to use.
Can Light Damage Ozempic®? What You Need to Know
In addition to temperature control, it is essential to protect Ozempic from light exposure. Light can also degrade the medication, impacting its stability and efficacy. By following the storage guidelines provided by the manufacturer and healthcare professionals, patients can ensure that their Ozempic remains effective throughout its intended shelf life.
Traveling with Ozempic® Tips for Safe Storage
When my patients ask, “Does Ozempic need to be refrigerated when I travel?” I tell them: yes, you do need to protect it from heat and freezing, but with a little planning it’s very doable. When you fly, always keep your Ozempic® pen in your carry-on bag, not in your checked luggage. The area where checked bags go can get very hot or very cold, and that can damage your medicine. In your carry-on, you have more control. I often suggest using a small insulated bag or travel cooler with ice packs. this helps keep the pen cool, especially if you’ll be in warm weather or traveling all day. Delays do occur! Just make sure the ice packs don’t touch the pen directly, so it doesn’t freeze. If you are staying in a hotel, put your pen in the room refrigerator, if there is one. If there is no fridge, try to keep it in the coolest part of the room, away from windows and direct sun, and below 86°F (30°C). Keep the pen in its original box to protect it from light. These small steps can help your pen stay safe and effective while you’re on the go.
