Do you teach diabetes and nutrition education?
One of my favorite teaching topics when teaching diabetes self-management is supermarket shopping. When people without diabetes go food shopping, they think about:
• Convenience
• Taste
• Value
When people with diabetes go food shopping, they think about:

As I was getting ready to teach the online supermarket shopping tour, I realized I had left the flash drive home. I had to improvise. An article on bread in the supermarket smarts section in the Diabetes Self-Management (DSM) magazine provided me with the perfect ready-made lesson plan, handout, and activity tool that dovetailed perfectly with the topic of the day. DSM does not feature lesson plans but it featured the perfect article which I converted into a lesson plan and handout. How perfect is that? The article covers:
• Definition of whole grains
• Calories and carbohydrates of 1-ounce of sliced bread
• Different types of fiber found in breads
• Ready-made handout and activity tool: List of 47 different types of bread with nutrition composition including: serving size, calories, fat, fat calories, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, sugar, fiber and protein.
I wrote all of the elements of this lesson plan so I can use it again but as a template for other topics using different articles. I want to share it with you, just in case, you happen to leave your flash drive home!
